As a Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, I see many patients who enjoy the benefits of our year-round favorable climate. However, as a result of the appealing draw of the sun and sea, Floridians must take extra precautions to avoid the irreversible effects of sun damage to their skin.

A few tips about Sunscreen
Effective damage-prevention – especially in Miami and South Florida – requires a focus on the harsh effects of prolonged exposure to the sun. Knowing they must protect their skin from damaging UV rays, my Miami cosmetic dermatology patients routinely ask me questions about sun screen – what works best, how much is enough – key questions such as those.
- During the summer, carry a water bottle with you to avoid dehydration through excessive perspiration or sun exposure.
- Don’t forget to apply sun block to face, décolletage and hands. To avoid clogged pores and summer breakouts, use a sun block to a lighter formulation instead of a heavy lotion.
I recommend La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra Light or Fluide Sunscreen (with Mexoryl) or Neutrogena Ultra Sheer (with Helioplex), use at least a 55 SPF. Both of these contain protection against UVA as well as UVB rays.
- Increase your intake of antioxidants! These compounds help protect against free radicals which cause cellular damage and aging.
Fruits such a blueberries, blackberries or pomegranate are great sources of antioxidants. Just add to your yogurt, cereal or salad! .
- Start using sun protective clothing for outdoor days. If you are at the beach or playing outdoor sports, use sun shirts and hats with UV protection.
