Uncommon Forms of Hair Loss
ALOPECIA AREATA
Alopecia areata is a patchy form of hair loss. It can occur in otherwise healthy individuals and can start quite abruptly. It can affect any area of the body where hair is present. If the patient has gray and dark hair, the dark hair often falls and the gray hair remains. This is the basis for the phenomenon “growing gray hair overnight.” Thyroid malfunction and vitiligo is sometimes associated with alopecia areata. The clinical course is unpredictable… sometimes the hair loss disappears with no treatment at all. Alopecia areata is quite responsive to cortisone injections into the involved scalp skin.
